Breast Flanges: How to get a good fit
Breast Flanges: The Importance of a Good Fit
DO YOU NEED A LARGER BREAST FLANGE?
Research has found that nearly one-third or more new mothers pump more comfortably and effectively with a larger flange.
Consider a larger size if you feel discomfort when pumping, even on low suction, or pump less milk than you believe you should.
WHICH SIZE IS RIGHT FOR ME?
Your anatomy determines the size that is right for you. If your nipple at rest is as wide as a US nickel (22mm) or larger, you will need a larger breast flange. But if it is smaller than this, you may still need a larger size. Because the breast changes during pumping, measuring tools alone may not tell you what you need to know.
The only way to be sure of a good fit is to compare what you see when you’re pumping with these photos. Which is most like you?
GOOD FIT
When a breast flange fits correctly there is space around the nipple during pumping, which gives greater comfort and milk flow.

TIGHT FIT
The nipple rubs against the sides of the breast flange during pumping, which squeezes the milk ducts and decreases milk flow. This rubbing can also cause skin trauma and pain.

Ameda offers Custom Breast Flanges that replace the standard flanges (25mm) included with most Ameda pumps and kits. Each box of our Custom Breast Flanges includes two flanges and two inserts—so there’s no chance of buying the wrong size.
